Claude vs ChatGPT: why learn Claude, and why here?
Most people reading this have already worked out where Claude sits next to GPT. ChatGPT has been extraordinary at an extraordinary number of things, and it owns consumer reach outright — 900 million weekly users as of February 2026, past a billion monthly by June, with Gemini close behind at 950 million in-app and 2.5 billion through AI Overviews. Claude has 245 million. But the data on people who work professionally with AI points somewhere else.
Anthropic passed a $47 billion annualised run-rate this summer, against OpenAI's roughly $25 billion — with about 80% of it coming from business and developer spend across 300,000+ business customers. That is roughly $192 per user per year against ChatGPT's $28. And it is accelerating fastest: Anthropic went from a $1 billion run-rate in late 2024 to $47 billion in around eighteen months, while OpenAI went from $10 billion to $25 billion over a comparable stretch.
Read that again, because it is the whole answer: Claude charges seven times more per user than ChatGPT does, and people pay it. Not because it is better at small talk — because the people paying are doing professional work with it. CLAUDE.md and project instructions, MCP servers wired into real systems, Claude Code shipping against live repositories, Claude Design.
So claude vs chatgpt is no longer a question about which chatbot answers better. If GPT is about users, Claude is about results — and if you intend to work professionally with AI rather than chat with it, Claude has become hard to avoid. Which means knowing the whole stack, not just the prompt box. That is what we are for.
The trajectory behind those numbers
- Reach. Claude has grown from around 4 million monthly users at the end of 2023 to 245 million across its surfaces by mid-2026 (Sensor Tower, State of AI 2026; Statista). Adoption still skews young and early — the late majority is ahead of us, not behind.
- Breadth. It is spreading sector by sector. Deloitte is rolling Claude out to nearly half a million employees, one of the largest enterprise AI deployments on record, and coding alone accounts for 35–45% of usage (Anthropic Economic Index).
- Depth. Within coding, Claude Code's weekly active users doubled in the first six weeks of 2026 (Reuters, 2026). Knowledge work is following the same curve — writing, analysis, strategy now have Claude somewhere in the loop.
- Direction of travel. Usage is shifting from "help me with this" toward "do this". Roughly 57% is now collaboration and 43% straight automation, and the fully autonomous share climbed from 27% to 39% through the first months of 2026 (Anthropic Economic Index). The skill being rewarded is no longer prompting a chatbot. It is directing a system.
So what do you actually need to know?
The honest question is not whether to learn Claude. It is how to get up to speed fast, and how to get properly good rather than merely conversant. Pick the level you are aiming at, from ClaudeCapable to ClaudeMaster — it makes no difference whether you are learning for your own satisfaction, to be the one who actually excels at work, or because there is a certification waiting at the end of it. Pick the parts you care about: prompting, context, tools, agents. Then get there in dialogue with a coach that knows where you stand and how you learn.

Common questions
Is Claude better than ChatGPT? Wrong question for most purposes. ChatGPT has far greater reach and is excellent at a very wide range of things. Claude charges roughly seven times more per user and gets paid it, because the people paying are doing professional work — code, tooling, agents, long-context reasoning. If you want a chat assistant, either works. If you are building on top of one, that revenue gap tells you where the professional weight has moved.
Should I learn Claude or ChatGPT? Learn the one your work runs on, and note which way the work is going. Usage across the market is shifting from asking to doing — the fully autonomous share of Claude usage went from 27% to 39% in the first months of 2026. That shift rewards knowing a whole stack: CLAUDE.md, MCP, Claude Code. It does not reward being better at typing prompts.
